TIMBER FRAME ENGINEERING
115 year old timber frame barn frame gets new pegs and mortise and tenon repair
FEA of Timber Frame under high load shows stress at base of posts
New foundation with flexible post mounts solve stress problem identified in FEA study
Octagonal Pole Frame for large commons house with straw bale roof and 15’ tall straw bale walls. The building also received the first known Code approval for an earthen floor system. Several similar designs have been based upon this particular framing system.
Although we do not advocate the use of straw bales as a building or insulating material, we have nevertheless on many occasions provided engineering services for such structures.

The FEA of the above pole framing system is shown here. Notice that as in many framed structures the stress is maximum at the foundation attachment.
Timber Frames
For the most comprehensive reference, download the .pdf Engineered Tree House construction is not something many plans examiners have reviewed before. Differential lateral movement amongst supports must be provided by slider plates, rocker arms, flexible linkages, hanging cables and the deflection of connecting members themselves. Lateral rigidity in the support frame must be provided along with simultaneous controlled vertical flexibility. Greenwood Engineering has pioneered the design and manufacture of special high strength live tree fasteners, along with related hardware systems.
